Matthew 25:29 (AMP)29 “For to everyone who has [and values his blessings and gifts from God, and has used them wisely], more will be given, and [he will be richly supplied so that] he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have [because he has ignored or disregarded his blessings and gifts from God], even what he does have will be taken away.

The parable of the talents was spoken by Jesus to help deliver an illustration of the Kingdom of heaven by telling the story of a man going on a long trip who called together his servants and entrusted varying portions of money (also called talents) to them while he was gone. In summary, He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last servant—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. After a long time, their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money.

I have five quick points to share that will hopefully help us to understand the awesome things that God has blessed us with and our humble responsibility to work what He has given us with all of our hearts, minds, souls, and strength as an expression of worship and service unto God.

1.We are all called to be God’s servants.

A servant is a person who serves others; a person employed by another. We are not working for ourselves nor to ourselves nor in our own power. We are working for God to serve others with the power, grace, and giftings He has granted us. I Peter 4:10 (AMP) clearly communicates our responsibility to serve in this way - Just as each one of you has received a special gift [a spiritual talent, an ability graciously given by God], employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace [faithfully using the diverse, varied gifts and abilities granted to Christians by God’s unmerited favor].

2. Each of us has been blessed and entrusted by God with spiritual gifts and talents based on our God-given abilities.

In the parable, God gave each of the servants talents based upon their abilities. God will never require us to do anything that He has not already fully equipped us with the power, the capacity, and the ability to carry it out with excellence and great success. It was already in you before you were formed in the womb. God made a powerful investment in you!

I Cor. 12:7 (NLT) says this – A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

God graced you with at least one spiritual gift and it looks good on you – so work it!

3. God expects us to use what He has given us and to multiply it.

Even though each servant was entrusted with different portions of talents/money in the parable, the expectation of the master was that each servant was going to work what he was given and multiply it. He was not a hard task master that stood over their shoulders, but He trusted that they would be good stewards over what they had been given.

In the same way, it is God’s expectation that we will work what He has given us by sowing it into the lives of others through our daily work, ministries, family and community responsibilities, and other spheres in which we have been given influence and the opportunity to serve.

Several of the servants took the talents they were given and doubled it by investing it. That is what God desires!

One of the servants took what He was given – which was one talent – dug a hole and buried it. That is not God’s desire.

Work what God has given you – no matter how big or small you think what you have been given is. Your contribution and investment in your work and in the lives of others matters! It really does! If you commit to using what you have been given, God will multiply it! If you are faithful over a little, God knows that He can trust you with more responsibilities (Matt. 25:21).

4. We are all accountable to God concerning what we do with what He has given us.

One day, we will all have to give an account for what we have done with what we have been given by God. Based upon our stewardship and how we have worked what He blessed us with, He will deem us as either good and faithful or wicked and lazy.

In the parable, the one who buried his talent and did not invest it as the others was called “wicked and lazy” by the master. But the ones who had been given more (2 and 5 talents) and invested it and multiplied it were called “good and faithful.”

Of course, we want to be named Good and Faithful! This will demonstrate that we stewarded what God committed and entrusted to us to serve Him and others was done well and with a faithful and good heart.

It is through this verse that I learned that the faithfulness God blesses is coupled with having a good attitude and heart while we serve. He could have just said he would bless the faithful servant, but he was intentional to say the Good AND Faithful servant. Both are required to receive the blessing for working what He gave you. He not only wants us to be committed and faithful in our service but to serve in the spirit of goodness which means excellence of character.

5. Lastly, you will be richly rewarded for your faithfulness – so don’t become weary in your well doing.

God will celebrate you for what you have done by blessing you with abundance, and your ultimate reward will be an everlasting one. Galatians 6:9 declares - And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. So, keep working what He gave you!
